Bicycle Carbon Steel
A carbon steel bicycle refers to a bike whose frame is made from carbon steel (often just called “steel”), which is an iron–carbon alloy. It’s one of the oldest and most traditional bicycle frame materials.
What “carbon steel” means in bicycles
Carbon steel contains iron with a small amount of carbon added to increase strength and hardness. In bicycle frames, it’s usually used in one of these forms:
High-tensile steel (Hi-Ten) – cheaper, heavier, less refined
Chromoly steel (Chromium-Molybdenum alloy steel) – stronger, lighter, higher quality (most “good steel bikes” use this)
